Potassium Nitrate Fertiliser: What It Does, When to Use It & Which Plants Benefit Most

Potassium Nitrate is one of those products that sounds highly specialised until you realise just how many uses it has around the garden.

It is best known as a high-potassium fertiliser, supplying plants with both potassium and readily available nitrogen. That makes it particularly useful as flowering and fruiting plants move into their most demanding stages of growth.

But there is another use that many gardeners know it for:

Helping old tree stumps break down.

In fact, potassium nitrate is the active ingredient in a number of products sold specifically as stump rotters or stump removers.

So whether you're feeding tomatoes, encouraging flowers, growing fruit or wondering what to do with that stubborn old stump sitting in the lawn, Potassium Nitrate is a surprisingly useful product to have in the garden shed.


What Is Potassium Nitrate?

Potassium Nitrate — KNO₃ — is a water-soluble salt containing two major plant nutrients:

Nitrogen (N) helps support foliage, stems, chlorophyll production and continued plant growth.

Potassium (K) plays an important role in flowering, fruit development, water regulation, nutrient movement and overall plant function.

That ratio is what makes it interesting.

A high-nitrogen fertiliser is excellent when your main goal is pushing lush leafy growth. But once a plant starts flowering and carrying fruit, continually pushing nitrogen isn't always what you want.

Using Potassium Nitrate for Tree Stump Breakdown

One of the less obvious — but very popular — uses for potassium nitrate is helping old tree stumps break down.

Anyone who has removed a mature tree knows the problem.

Cutting the tree down can be the easy part. What remains is a dense lump of wood and roots that can sit in the garden for years.


Mechanical stump grinding is the quickest solution, but it isn't always practical or worth the cost, particularly for smaller stumps or ones in awkward locations.

This is where potassium nitrate is commonly used.

Rather than instantly dissolving the stump, it is used as a stump breakdown treatment, helping create conditions that allow the wood to become softer and easier to break apart over time.


Commercial stump rotter products sold in New Zealand can be almost entirely potassium nitrate.

The normal approach involves creating holes through the upper surface of the stump so the treatment can penetrate deeper into the wood, then allowing time and moisture to assist the breakdown process.

The important word here is time.


Potassium Nitrate isn't going to make a stump disappear over the weekend.

Stump decomposition is still a biological and physical process. The size of the stump, species of tree, age of the wood, moisture and surrounding conditions all affect how quickly it deteriorates.

Think of it as helping an old stump become easier to deal with rather than magically removing it.

Potassium Nitrate as a Fertiliser

Its second major garden use is plant nutrition.

Potassium Nitrate provides both nitrate nitrogen and a large amount of potassium, making it useful when plants are still actively growing but are also beginning to flower or develop crops.


The nitrate nitrogen is readily available to plants, while potassium becomes particularly important as many crops move into flowering and fruit development.

This makes Potassium Nitrate useful across a surprisingly wide range of plants.

Tomatoes, Chillies and Capsicums

Tomatoes are probably one of the easiest examples.

A healthy tomato plant in summer may be producing new leaves, extending stems, opening flowers and carrying several stages of fruit all at once.

It therefore still requires nitrogen for healthy growth, while potassium becomes increasingly important as fruiting intensifies.


The same principle applies to chillies and capsicums.

Once established plants begin flowering heavily and carrying fruit, their nutritional needs are quite different from those of a young seedling.

Potassium Nitrate can help supply potassium without completely removing nitrogen from the feeding programme.


Cucumbers, Courgettes and Pumpkins

Cucurbits can produce an enormous amount of growth in a relatively short period.

Pumpkins can send vines metres across the garden while simultaneously producing flowers and swelling fruit.

Cucumbers and courgettes can also crop continuously through the warmer months.

These plants need balanced nutrition, but their combination of rapid growth + heavy fruit production makes potassium particularly important.


Strawberries and Berries

Potassium is also an important nutrient for strawberries and other berry-producing plants.

The nutritional balance that suits a plant during vegetative growth isn't necessarily the same balance it needs once flowering and fruit production begin.

Strawberries need to support leaves, roots, flowers and developing fruit simultaneously, which is why feeding programmes often shift towards greater potassium availability during cropping.


Dahlias and Other Flowering Plants

Potassium isn't only about edible crops.

Fast-growing flowering plants such as dahlias also place significant demands on their nutrient supply.


Early in the season, dahlias need strong vegetative growth to build the stems and foliage that will support flowers later.

Once budding begins, potassium becomes increasingly useful as part of a balanced feeding programme.

Potassium Nitrate can therefore be a useful targeted nutrient where you want to provide potassium while still supporting ongoing growth.

It isn't a complete fertiliser, though, so plants still need access to phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sulphur and trace elements.


Fruit Trees

Potassium is also important for cropping fruit trees including:

Citrus

Apples

Pears

Stonefruit

Avocados


A heavily cropping tree has to move large quantities of water, sugars and nutrients while supporting both foliage and developing fruit.

Potassium forms an important part of that process.

Again, the goal isn't simply to throw potassium at every fruit tree. Good nutrition is about supplying the nutrient balance the plant actually needs.

But where both nitrate nitrogen and potassium are required, Potassium Nitrate gives growers a relatively simple way of supplying both together.


Potassium Nitrate vs Sulphate of Potash

This is probably the most useful comparison for home gardeners.

Both products provide high levels of potassium, but they serve slightly different purposes.


Choose Potassium Nitrate when:

Your plants are still actively growing and you want to supply both nitrogen and potassium.

This can be particularly useful through active flowering and fruiting when plants are still putting on new growth.


Choose Sulphate of Potash when:

You want to increase potassium without adding additional nitrogen.

This may be more appropriate later in the growing season, or where plants already have plenty of nitrogen available.


Sulphate of Potash also provides sulphur.

Neither product is automatically better.

The question is simply:

Does the plant need nitrogen as well as potassium?

If yes, Potassium Nitrate becomes very interesting.

If no, Sulphate of Potash may make more sense.


Can You Apply Too Much?

Definitely.

More potassium doesn't automatically mean more flowers, and more fertiliser doesn't automatically mean faster growth.

Excessive fertiliser can damage roots, increase salt levels around plants and interfere with the balance of other nutrients.

Very high potassium levels can also affect the availability of nutrients such as calcium and magnesium.

So whether you're feeding tomatoes, strawberries or fruit trees, follow sensible application rates rather than assuming stronger is better.


One Product, Two Very Different Garden Jobs

On one side, it is a high-potassium fertiliser useful for plants that are simultaneously growing, flowering and producing crops.
